As someone who has struggled with anxiety, I know how challenging it can be to speak out and ask for help. When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 20 years ago there was no such thing as the ‘Diabetes Online Community.’ Heck, I’m pretty sure there wasn’t even such a thing as ‘online’. Sure, I went to diabetes camp as a child, and sure there was one or two other kids at my school that had diabetes that I knew of, but we never spoke or bonded over sharing our personal experiences about living with this disease. “I’ve worn the Dexcom CGM before; this is easy; I’ve got this; I can totally do it. Oh wait, what? You want me to wear THAT on my arm?” This was my train of thought as it took me days, weeks, maybe even a month before I gathered up the courage to unwrap the OmniPod demo kit my Diabetes Educator gave me at my last appointment to stick it on my arm for the next 3 days.
I haven’t always been one to talk about diabetes. In fact, a few years ago I would have avoided any conversation around the topic at all cost. Although I’ve had type 1 diabetes for over 17 years, I feel like I am constantly learning about this disease. For example, in recent years I learned about how stress can impact your blood sugar levels, but I had never experienced this firsthand myself, or so I thought. It wasn’t until I got my Dexcom where I got to see the effects of stress on my blood sugar levels. Literally, I watched my blood sugars go up, up and up with no valid reason other than the fact that I was studying and stressed for exams. It’s only been about a month and a half since I started studying Holistic Nutrition at CSNN and already I have learned so much. The other week I signed up for an extra course on managing stress with nutrition and learned about the importance of the food we eat and how it can affect our mood and energy levels. The body is amazing in that if we treat it well and consistently fuel it with nutrient-rich foods, this itself can have a huge impact on our health, including our moods and our ability to manage stress.
The B vitamins are essential to our health playing a vital role in brain function and our mental well-being. It is important for us to include “brain food”, B complex vitamins, in our diet as they are needed for everything from the healthy maintenance of brain cells to the metabolism of carbohydrates, the brain’s source of fuel. B vitamins are also necessary for the production of neurotransmitters, chemicals in our brain that balance our mood, keep us happy and help improve our mental health.
The B Vitamins
B1 (Thiamin): Enables the brain’s ability to metabolize glucose making energy available for mental activities.
B2 (Riboflavin): Needed for the metabolism of the amino acid tryptophan. The body uses tryptophan to help make niacin and serotonin, a “feel good” hormone.
B3 (Niacin): Plays an important role in maintaining mental agility.
B5 (Pantothenic Acid): Known as the “anti-stress vitamin”. It plays a role in the production of adrenal hormones and neurotransmitters.
B9 (Folic Acid): Helps maintain normal levels of serotonin.
B6 (Pyridoxine) and B12 (Cobalamin): Help in the production of a neurotransmitter that assists memory and learning.
